The following is an unordered list of our top recommendations for alternatives to Spotify as a music enjoyer, with a brief description about each to tell you how these platforms serve to uplift and support the artists and musicians that make their platforms possible.
Bandcamp
- Allows streaming of music as well as incentives for purchasing and owning the music you love; of which a majority goes directly to the artist's pocket.
- Actively promotes and writes about undiscovered artists who are making great music.
SoundCloud
- Surprisingly still hanging on despite plentiful questionable business choices.
- Still a fantastic place to find underground artists, hobbiests, and remixes that you couldn't find elsewhere.
Hole in the market:
There is something missing from this list and it's a music streaming app that is comparable to Spotify in terms of pleasant user experience, while actively promoting a change in the industry in terms of who, where, and how revenue is distributed between corporate investments, artists, labels, etc. We believe that a larger portion of the generated streaming revenue should be shared with the artists themselves who made the work that drives those numbers.
